College football authorities, especially executives of the NCAA governing body dont like to talk about it, but betting plays a big role in the sports

College football authorities, especially executives of the NCAA governing body dont like to talk about it, but betting plays a big role in the sports popularity. College football has legions of fans, most notably current college students and alumni graduates of the schools that play football every week. The game is also popular with gamblers. And while most people who bet do so for added excitement and invest only what they can afford to lose, many people are big-time gamblers. They live or die with the odds. The odds are, of course, involve the point spread which is established each week for every college game by Las Vegas odds makers. Lots of factors go into creating the odds, home field advantage , coaching , winning and losing streaks , conference and out-of-conference schedule , weather , injuries , the list goes on and on.Yet, betting odds determine how wagers are made.

For example: if the odds have made a so-so team the favorite, people who wager are likely to go the other way and bet the underdog. If the underdog is a really bad team, money wagered will go to the favorite even if the odds seem to make the bet a bad risk.Since odds are based on point spreads, a favorite can win the game, but you can lose the bet because the spread wasnt covered. Often, a college team from a top conference or one that is ranked in the Top Ten nationally will be favored to win a game by two, three, four, sometimes even more than four touchdowns.

Normally, the disparity between the two teams in games like this is great enough so that the overwhelming favorite can win the game and you can beat the odds. But it doesnt always happen that way. The big favorite may win the game, but by two few points. And, in that case, you can, and will, lose your bet. Of course, college teams, unlike professional teams, tend to pour it on and often do win games by 4, 5, 6 touchdowns , even more. Theres no mercy asked , none given. But the risk is always there that the favorite will just do enough to win the game.

If you bet, you have to look at a teams past history to see if they run up the score or go easy on inferior opponents.Fans who bet also need to consider how the odds makers came up with the point spread , or the odds for the game. Remember: conferences play a huge role, often overshadowing won-loss records in some games. A Big 10 team with a mediocre record may actually have the odds in its favor to cover a line against a winning team from a secondary conference. Finally, the odds are just numbers , speculation from a professional handicapper who may or may not be right. When betting, consider the professionals opinion, but always resort to what you know and believe , because its your money at risk.

Every year in college football expert analysts in the national print media , on TV network sports shows , on sports-talk radio shows , and on blogs

Every year in college football expert analysts in the national print media , on TV network sports shows , on sports-talk radio shows , and on blogs all over the World Wide Web come out with predictions on which teams will soar like an eagle and which teams will fall flat.Predictions, of course, are like the weather. They change frequently. So fans of the sport, in particular of specific teams sometimes tend to get caught up in the words theyve read or heard that came from someone who may or may not know more than they themselves know. And yet, when someone labels himself an expert, the label tends to stick , at least for a period of time.

The fact is, so-called experts who provide predictions about college football teams are really handicappers. Most often, the predictions are based on events that occurred the previous season. Perhaps the Arkansas Razorbacks won their last three games after losing early in the season. That late season success is used by an expert to predict future success, in an upcoming season. Of course, the factors that contributed to the wins may no longer be present. No matter. Arkansas, based on its previous performance, will probably be listed as a team to watch.Sometimes, predictions occur during a season.

For example, lets say the Princeton Tigers have just lost four games in a row, a three out of conference. A prediction for them is likely to be that theyre in a funk and likely to lose their next game even if that next game will be played against an inferior in-conference opponent.Fans, and those who bet on college football, have to know which predictions to take seriously and which to overlook. Its not always easy. But, if youre someone who pays close attention to the sport, and to what is happening around your team, you should be able to separate reality from fiction.Gamblers, in particular, need to recognize a prediction that marks a real trend, something to be heeded, and a prediction that is based on, well, nothing. Its important, of course, because there will be money on the line.

Every bet is serious and should only be made when the person making the bet has all the facts at his/her disposal.Again, predictions are exactly what the word implies , a guess on what may or may not happen. As such, the chance that the prediction will be right is no greater than the chance that it will be wrong. A late season winning streak the previous year is no guarantee of success in the upcoming year. Yet, predictions may suggest otherwise.A current winning streak against inferior competition may lead to a misleading and potentially costly prediction as well. Keep these thoughts in mind , or even if youre just a rabid fan of college football.

The NCAA National Collegiate Athletic Association is the governing body that oversees and regulates the football programs of literally hundreds

The NCAA National Collegiate Athletic Association is the governing body that oversees and regulates the football programs of literally hundreds of colleges and universities. Included in this vast group are teams from conferences, such as the Big 10 , the PAC 10 , the ACC Atlantic Coast Conference … the Big East , and a few others that dominate the sport.Teams from these major conferences are always included in the Weekly Rankings that rate the various squads based on their Won-Loss Records , their Strength of Schedules , their national reputations , and more.

Additionally, the rankings play a large part in determining which two teams end up playing for the BCS National Championship in January of each season. The Weekly Rankings are established by sports experts in the national press and are subject to change throughout the season. Frequently, a team with a poorer record will receive a higher ranking than a team with a better record because it has played against more ranked teams. Most years, early season losses tend to count for far less than games frittered away near the end of the season.By the same token, a win against an inferior out-of-conference opponent carries little weight with the experts that create the Weekly Rankings. And yet, if two Big 10 opponents face off against each other, the winner will almost certainly improve its national ranking. Each year, there are a few independent teams that are not part of the major conferences, but still manage to get recognized by sports experts.

The University of Notre Dame is a good example. This storied franchise has always been an independent and, in most years, has been ranked in the top ten. In fact, the Irish have won the National Championship and, even though they are independent, always play one of the toughest schedules in all of college football. The rankings always add an element of excitement to the College Football Schedule and help to rev up certain games, such as a late season game between a Number One ranked team and a Number Two ranked team. It happens all the time and when it does, TV ratings go through the roof.

In recent seasons, the dominant team has been the University of Southern California USC from the PAC 10. Known for their pro-style offense and their fast, ferocious defense, this California squad has been running over its opposition. And, while they have not always held the top ranking during the regular season, they have managed to end up as Top Dog several times. For a number of years before USC rose to the top, teams from Florida, including University of Miami, Florida State University and the University of Florida took turns being the best college football team in the country. It will be interesting to see if USC dominates the Season , or if some other team emerges.

NCAA College Football is like any other sport , certain teams tend to dominate year in and year out. Of course, its more difficult to

NCAA College Football is like any other sport where certain teams tend to dominate year in and year out. Of course, its more difficult to accomplish this in college football because of the near-constant turnover in player personnel.Unlike professional football or other professional sports, colleges and universities that play football competitively only have their players for at most four playing years, the time it takes to complete their academic careers and receive their degrees.

That means that a team with two or three or more very good players can only rely on them for up to four years. In many cases, when the lure of a big money contract is impossible to ignore, and the player is coveted by the NFL, he turns professional before he receives his degree. And yet, there are college programs, and teams, that win consistently.

Generally, these programs are in the major college conferences, the Big 10 , the Atlantic Coast Conference ACC, the PAC 10 Pacific Athletic Conference, the Big East , and a few others.Teams from these conferences like USC University of Southern California, the University of Miami or Florida and Florida State are recruiting top prospects and killing on the football field with superior atheletes playing for them. Michigan and Ohio State from the Big 10 are always among the countrys best teams and storied franchises. Year after year, they are ranked in the weekly Top Ten national rankings. And these teams, plus others like LSU Louisiana State University , Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma and Nebraska, just to name a few others are among the group of teams that play for the National Championship every season.

Now, only one team can finish the season as The Number One Team. But, it almost certainly will be from the group mentioned earlier. And, even the teams that dont win the National Championship and the Number One ranking still finish each season strongly. Its not uncommon for any of these top college football teams to win 8 or 9 or even 10 games every season , no matter how much their roster has turned over from the previous season. And if a team is winning that many games, its only losing one or two or, in a real off year, perhaps three games. Thats success and a winning tradition. And thats why winning college football teams often perform before huge crowds of up to 100,000 people every Saturday afternoon. Thats a larger crowd than NFL teams usually get. And thats amazing , proof of the immense popularity of college football.

Of course, like the NFL, winning college football teams receive extensive coverage from TV networks, further increasing their audience , and the popularity of college football. All in all, college football, especially where winning teams are concerned, has created legions of fans , and almost endless, non-stop excitement every autumn, from coast,to-coast.

The NFL is one of the most successful sports enterprises in the entire world, big, big business. So its no surprise that, even though the season only lasts

The NFL is one of the most successful sports enterprises in the entire world, big, big business. So its no surprise that, even though the season only lasts from September to January, news about the NFL, its teams and its players continues all year long.Clearly, the league believes it is in its own best interests to keep itself on the back page Sports Page of the countrys major newspapers. And, unlike other major sports, the NFL does a terrific job of staying in the headlines.

Unfortunately, the news is not always good.In recent years, a number of NFL players have run into problems with law enforcement agencies and local police departments around the country. The most noteworthy example was the case of Atlanta Quarterback Michael Vick who was charged with a serious felony crime, promotion of illegal dog fighting. Vicks case made headlines everywhere and he was eventually convicted of the crime and sentenced to a lengthy jail term. Other players like Adam Pacman Jones have also made bad headlines for firing a loaded pistol, illegally, of course. More recently, Plaxico Burress of The New York Giants accidentally shot himself in the leg while at a New York City nightclub, a clear violation of city law. Burress, currently awaiting trial, may also receive a jail sentence.

Of course, much of the news generated by the NFL is good, not bad , like the coverage it receives for its annual draft of graduating college seniors. The draft was extensively covered by ESPN on TV and there were also many stories written in local and national newspapers.Other stories to make the newspapers and TV-and-radio sports talk shows this off-season have been about marquee players, such as Defensive End Jason Taylor of the Miami Dolphins possibly seeking a trade , Chicagos Brian Urlacher ending his brief stay-away from mini-camp , the release of running back Travis Henry by the Denver Broncos , Thomas Jones attempt to force the New York Jets to renegotiate his contract , and much, much more.Obviously, there are many, many more stories about the NFL, its teams and players that come out literally every day of every week and help to keep the league front-and-center in the minds of its fans.

The result of this is, of course, a heightened anticipation of the season that has the normally crazy fans of the league in a near frenzied state when the games are played.Keep in mind: the NFL for all the popularity of its games is a league that thrives on wagering. Fans bet more money on football than on any other sport And that is one reason why off-season news stories are so important. The indisputable fact about the NFL is this: any way you look at it, whatever you think about it, the NFL is, and has long been, big news.

If you enjoy sports, all sports, and love betting on games , there is a way for you to get Free Picks. Its absolutely true. You can get game analysis and picks, at no cost to you, for the NFL and College Football completely free of charge. Are Free Picks better than those you pay for from a Professional Handicapper? Perhaps yes , perhaps no. Theres no set answer to that question because the handicapper who charges for picks and the website that offers them to you for free are probably much different in the information they receive. In fact, some Free Pick sites actually scour other websites, including those of Professional Handicappers, compile the information and then offer it to you. So its possible, on some free websites the picks being offered to you are coming from pay for information venues of Professional Handicappers. There are actually many, many Free Picks available to you.

For example: there is Sportsfreepicks.com , Allsportslocks.com , Ultimatecapper.com , NationalSportsMonitor.com , and seemingly countless others. And all of these sites, included the ones mentioned here, give you news, information, tips and picks for free about the pro and college football. If youre truly a sports fanatic, and someone who enjoys betting from time to time, this should be great news for you. Now you know that you have great options: you can trust your own judgment and bet any major sports contest based on your personal knowledge.

You can pay for information from a Professional Handicapper, or grab some free picks and see how it goes.Think it over carefully, try em all, and the decision should be easy, go for the system that made you a truckload of cash. If the Free information leads you nowhere it may be worth your time and money to buy picks. Many handicappers charge fees that are affordable and often include Best Bets, almost a guarantee win for you.Try a Professional Handicapper once , thats giving him a shot. If you win, buy another pick. But remember: there are still scores of websites offering picks for free , picks that are based on the same information.

So if youve had some bad luck with a free pick or two, its probably wise not to give up. Try a different capper, you may have better luck using information from another source.Remember: theres no charge for the picks , you dont have to use them, but it makes good sense to see what someone else is thinking, before you bet.

People who like to bet on NFL football games have lots of choices available regarding information. They can rely on themselves and trust their knowledge of the league and its teams. They can call or access a Professional Handicapper online and pay for picks. Or , they can access the internet and find numerous websites offering Free Picks on NFL games every week. They are all interesting choices. Many people who bet are avid fans and probably know almost as much, wink wink, as a Professional Handicapper who sells their knowledge of the game and often promise or guarantee winning wagers to those who buy their picks , especially their best bets.

In truth, Professional Handicappers may know alot more than the average fan because they spend all of their time studying trends , statistics and all the other daily and weekly news about the NFL, its teams and players that impact games, the good and bad breaks that often have devastating and unexpected effects on the outcomes of games that cover the line or because of, not.

Professional Handicappers who charge for their services, the websites offering Free NFL picks should only deal with known facts and information. The thing that sets them apart is their information, and all you have to do is sit down in front of a computer and log onto any one of a number of websites, such as Predictem.com , 4nflpicks.com , nflpicks.com , and many more for information and analysis about upcoming games you can bet with confidence on.

Free Picks are sometimes backed by rationale for them. It doesnt cost you anything , you dont have to use the picks, but if you enjoy gambling on games, it is probably worthwhile to go online and see what these experts have to say about a game you may want to bet on. Some of these Free Pick websites dont handicap all the games , they pick and choose so that they can give you better analysis and an increased chance at being right if you bet.

Naturally, after youve read what these Free Pick websites have to offer, you may elect to trust yourself and make bets based on your knowledge of recent trends and other news impacting teams.Whichever way you decide to go, the end result will have you sitting on the edge of your couch watching the game unfold , and hoping you made the right decision. Its a large part of what makes NFL Football so exciting and compelling , and why it is so immensely popular with sports fans. When the 2009-2010 Season finally begins, you may want to try your luck with a Free Pick website. The information you get wont cost you anything, but it could be worth a lot.

Every Saturday in autumn college football teams from every part of the country square off against one another. And in every game, one team is the favorite while the other is the underdog. The question fans need answered, the same is true for people who bet, is which team is the favorite , and why?Get an answer to that question from an expert football handicapper and, if youre a fan, you can watch the game with some reasonable expectation of enjoying it , especially if the team you root for is covering the spread.

If youre someone who enjoys wagering on college football games, you are likely to have bet using solid info and now have a good chance of winning the bet.But where do you get the picks on these games and how much do they cost? The fact is that there are scores of Professional Handicappers willing to sell you picks for just about every college game, some of which they proclaim to be Best Bets. Are these picks sure things , of course not? Are they expensive , depending on who you buy them from, the answer: Yes , maybe , no!

Is there another way of getting picks on football games that is not expensive? In a word, Yes! Fans, and those who bet on games, know that there are websites all over the internet offering information of college football games, for Free! Thats without charge, of course. Interestingly, these websites offer the same kind of rationale and clear thinking about games that you can get from Professional Handicappers who want you to pay for that information. Their thinking is based on recent past performance , on Home Field Advantage , on Won-Loss Records , Strength of Schedule , injuries, all of the seemingly countless factors that are used to come up with a pick.

Football fans, and those who bet on games, dont have to work too hard to find the Free and Paid Picks on College Football Games. As any fan that is savvy knows, getting information is really simple, but good game analysis isnt. Paying for a Professional Handicapper whos introduicng you to his service by providing free ncaaf Picks is certainly better than spending your hard-earned money for it , at least upfront untill they can show you they can play ball and win you some cash.So during college season, give careful thought to buying picks.

And remember, it may not be necessary at first. The same quality of picks will probably be available cost-free. And if you choose to get your picks for free, youll have more money to wager. Thats a good deal.

NCAA College Football is a sport for action fans, college kids and alumni, and for people who enjoy betting on football. With dozens of games to choose from every weekend during the college football season, its almost an embarrassment of riches for gamblers. As Las Vegas odds makers establish betting lines every week for the seemingly countless games that are played on Saturday all over the country, are always based on a number of factors.

For example:A team from the Big 10 Conference, like Northwestern, for instance, may be favored over a team from a lesser conference , even if Northwestern comes into the game with a losing record and its opponent has a winning record. Why would the odds makers establish Northwestern as the favorite? They consider Strength of Schedule and Northwestern, because it has to play other teams in its conference, like perennial powerhouses Michigan and Ohio State, is considered to have played more difficult teams than the team with a winning record that may have beaten really poor teams.Additionally, home field advantage is huge in college football. A top team like the Michigan Woverines plays home games in front of about 100,000 screaming, crazy fans. These passionate fans make lots of noise for the home team and often intimidate and disrupt the play calling of the visiting team. In general, even when there are not tens of thousands of screaming fans, there is a home field advantage. In the NFL, it is worth about three points; the same is generally true for college football games maybe a bit more for some stadiums.

Coaching is also an important factor used by odds makers to create a betting line on a game. Some teams have nationally known and respected Head Coaches who have established themselves over long and successful careers. A case in point is Head Coach Joe Paterno of Penn State University PSU. In a career spanning well over 40 years, pappa has turned his team into a national power and has won more games than virtually any other coach in the history of college football. That impressive resume is worth something to odds makers and is usually reflected in the point spread.Naturally, winning and losing streaks are other factors that are used to establish a betting favorite for an upcoming game. Injuries are another very important consideration, as well.

Clearly, there are many factors that are used to establish a weekly betting line on the hundreds of college football games that are played every Saturday in autumn. However, there is always one thing that cant be measured or factored into a point spread. Thats the heart, grit and determination of the players who will be on the field when the whistle blows to start the game. Remember that when you look at a point spread for a college game and before you put your money on the line and at-risk.

What is with the logic-defying stranglehold that the AFC has held over the NFC for the past decade and a half. Not since the early stages of the first Clinton Administration has the NFC been able to claim statistical superiority. You are, Bill Parcells is so fond of saying, what you are. And by any sane yardstick (that is, all games after the exhibition season and before the Pro Bowl), the AFC has been better than the NFC.

It basically has put the wood to the NFC in both regular-season interconference games and the Super Bowl. Most wars are shorter than the AFCs period of dominance. By the time the tide turns, the Hundred Years War may wind up being shorter.ESPN, SI.com, John Clayton , every pro football gas-bag in the country has speculated about why. Better quarterbacks, smarter coaches, better-looking cheerleaders, better spy cameras . . . its all spec. TV gabber Cris Collinsworth says that it all has to do with the New England Patriots. Teams in the AFC know that the Patriots are the team they must catch up with, says Collinsworth. In the NFC, which team is the standard? Arizona ?Collinsworth may in the right church but the wrong pew when anyalyzing the AFCs dominance. The numbers, anyway, say that the Patriots are responsible for a huge chunk of the NFCs bed-wetting. Over the past six seasons New England has bended, folded and mutilated its NFC opponents. Even in the fall and early winter of 2008-09, when Tom Brady was spending Sunday afternoons getting fed grapes by Gisele Bundchen, the Pats still won three of four against NFC teams. Everyone always gives you the old cycle theory, said former New England linebacker Mike Vrabel, But 10 or 11 seasons . . . thats one long cycle.

So what gives here? NFC teams get the same number of draft choices, the same amount of TV money and can spend the same on salaries as AFC teams can. Yet year after year, they come up short. Is it the quarterbacks? Even die-hard Bears fans will have to admit that Peyton Manning and Philip Rivers are better than Jay Cutler. The QBs are so good in the AFC that Brady didnt even make it to the Pro Bowl in 2006.Is it the coaches? Bill Belichick against Wade Philips. Who would you back with your last $20 bill? Is it the overall talent? LaDainian Tomlinson, Ben Roethlisberger, Ray Lewis . . . who in the NFC matches up? Probably all of the above, and other factors not even mentioned.

As we look ahead to the 2009 season, NFC backers are faced with some sobering numbers: Three times in the last 14 seasons the conferences have finished at .500. Every other season, the AFC has had the edge. The AFC is so dominant that months before opending day Vegas oddsmakers give the NFC 7 points on any Super Bowl matchup that might develop. And as they say in the sports books on the Strip, never bet on a streak to end.
